Winner of the Michael Marks Illustrated Poetry Award 2016, for outstanding illustration at the British Library London. The clearing, written by Luke Thompson and published by Atlantic Press; is a minimalist poetic sequence using experimental photography and interventionist drawing. The imagery reflects and reveals the narrative, highlighting the sense of reader as voyeur, as well as developing the symbolism and ambience of the poetry.

Each copy of the clearing is unique, with every cover individually hand stamped with formations of birds. These indeterminate qualities evoke the hand-crafted nature of book-making as well as developing ideas about movement and patterns in nature.
